A wayfinding system in a children’s hospital serves more than just directional purposes. It must cater to the needs of young patients and create a cheerful, child-friendly atmosphere. At the Bethel Children’s Center in Bielefeld, we made this our priority. The new Bethel Children’s Center spans an impressive 20,000 square meters and offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities. Special emphasis was placed on creating a child- and family-friendly environment. From the first glance at the building’s exterior, the cheerful and welcoming ambiance is immediately evident. The vibrant design instills a sense of security and joy in the children and their families right from the start. The wayfinding system at Bethel Children’s Center is an integral part of the architecture and significantly contributes to creating a positive atmosphere. It harmonizes perfectly with the wall graphics and integrates into a cohesive overall appearance. This colorful experiential world is reflected throughout the wayfinding system. Playful wayfinding markers, specifically designed for children, guide them through the bright, light-filled corridors and direct them to various departments and rooms. Clear and structured orientation is especially important to make navigation within the building as straightforward as possible for young patients and their families. The information in the wayfinding system is intentionally simplified to avoid overwhelming users, and detailed information is provided only at the destination. This enables easy and intuitive location finding without the risk of feeling lost. At the Bethel Children’s Center, the well-being of the children is always the top priority. Our goal is to make their stay as pleasant as possible and to create an environment where they feel comfortable and safe. The innovative wayfinding system, friendly architecture, and thoughtful design all contribute to ensuring that children and families feel well cared for. We are proud to have created a modern, yet child-friendly center that meets the highest medical standards while always keeping the well-being of young patients in mind.
