The University Hospital in Greifswald is one of the largest and most modern hospitals in the region. Combining patient care with university research, it offers and develops the latest medical treatments. With the completion of the new Diagnostic Center, it became essential to replace the existing signage system, which was not well understood or accepted by visitors and patients, with an intuitively comprehensible wayfinding concept. The result is a graphically and conceptually revised wayfinding system that utilizes and reuses the existing signage elements. The new wayfinding system is based on the division of horizontal access into “corridors” (1 to 12) and the circular arrangement of “buildings” (A to K) around the main building, with each building distinguished by color. Accordingly, the stations were named consistently after the buildings and floors. For example, in Building K on Floor 5, you will find Station K5, and in Corridor 7, Elevator No. 7. A new room numbering concept reflects this system, making room numbers logically aligned with the buildings, corridors, and floors. These new orientation fundamentals have simplified wayfinding through clear, graphically organized elements, guiding patients and visitors intuitively to their destinations. Additionally, approximately 40% of the old signage was saved and reused in the new Diagnostic Center.
